Gertrude was born about 1897 in Wentworth, Yorkshire.1   Gertrude's father was Thomas STEER and her mother was Emma STEER. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Albert Edwd, Thomas, Joel, Geo Fredk, Cecil, Matilda and Eleanor.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
