A girl named Elizabeth Ann Steer was tohave been married to a carabineer named Greave but thecommanding officer refused him leave. The next day theCarabineers having left for India, the girl hung herself in herbrother's house. She had, it appears, had a previous sweetheart, who had not acted fairly by her and there was found upon herdead body the following letter to him: ''George, You took greattrouble to write to me on Tuesday about my going with Greaves. He was a man, he will either live or die for me, and I will doso for him. George, you deceived me. Daily and hourly you soughtmy ruin, often did you wish to get me into trouble, but the Lordprotected me so far. Your conscience will tell you was a baddeceitful man; but God never pays debts with money. My life Iwill forfeit. Pay my dear father and mother what you owe me - itwill help pay funeral expenses. You have broken my mind - youseduced me - and God will reward you for it. You will neverprosper. Remember these last dying words of one who has been thedupe of all your lies. My heart aches, my hand trembles - and ina few moments I be launched into eternity.'' The jury found averdict of Temporary Insanity.
