Herbert was born about 1890 in Woolwich Kent.1   Herbert's father was William H STEARS and his mother was Elizabeth STEARS. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Edward, George F, Walter, Ada, Emily and Sarah K.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
