Benjamin was born about 1846 in Pluckley, Kent.1   Benjamin's father was Benjamin STEARS and his mother was Harriett STEARS. He had a brother and three sisters, named Horace, Harriett, Charlotte and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
