Sam was born about 1855 in Thurgoland, Yorkshire.1   Sam's father was Samuel STEAR and his mother was Hannah STEAR. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, John, George Henry, Charles, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Rebecca.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
