Joseph was born about 1879 in Spitalfields, London.1   Joseph's father was Joseph STEAR and his mother was Eleanor STEAR. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Henry, Frederick, Jane, Ethel and Katherine.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
