Joseph was born before 1777 and his baptism took place on December 16th, 1777 in St Austell.  Joseph's father was John Brokenshire (Brokensher) and his mother was Amy. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Benjamin, Mark, Amy and Amelia.  He was the oldest of the six children.
