William was born in 1884 in Masham.1  William's father was Benjamin Shambrook and his mother was Elizabeth Bilson.  His paternal grandparents were Daniel Shambrook and Maria Lane. He had a brother and three sisters, named Walter, Margaret, Helena and Bertha.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
