William was born in 1848. William's father was William Letts and his mother was Jane. His paternal grandparents were Michael Letts and Lucy. He had a brother and a sister, named Walter and Eleanor. He was the second oldest of the three children. He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named William, Walter, Frank, Ernest, Eleanor, L, Annie and Lydia.
