Pieter was born on June 27th, 1818 in Tulbagh and his baptism took place there on November 2nd, 1820.¹ Pieter's father was Johannes Carel Winterbach and his mother was Dorethea Elizabetha Theron. His paternal grandparents were Johann Carl Winterbach and Maria Magdalena Huijsamer. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Johannes, Carel, Hendrik, Dirk, Maria, Johanna, Dorothea, Susanna and Anna. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 53 on April 8th, 1872 in Ceres. He was buried in Ceres Owen Street cemetery.²¹
