Edith Maud was born in 1878. Edith Maud's father was John Henry CHALLEN and her mother was Esther Ocean GRAHAM.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles William CHALLEN and Jane MERRETT; her maternal grandfather is GRAHAM. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Charles Henry, William Norman, John Linton Graham, Stanley Gordon, Thomas, Harriet Elizabeth, Esther Alexander, Alice Ada, Lilias Eveline and Stella Charlotte.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
