Joseph was born in 1832 in Beech Hill.  Joseph's father was Joseph APPLETON and his mother was Charlotte WELCH.  His paternal grandparents were William APPLETON and Lucy KEEP; his maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Miriam WELCH. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Henry, William, Thomas, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
