William Brereton (or Broughton) is one of my 32 Great Great Great Great Great (6X) Grandfathers. William Brereton is confirmed as the father of William from his son’s marriage certificate of 1839.
There was another William Brereton of Overton (evident from a Will) who had a sons Ralph, George and daughters Hannah and Sarah (also William, Ann, Martha, Elizabeth, Mary & Ellen)
1742, William was baptised at Bunbury, a twin son of Sandford Brereton (and Elizabeth Dale).
1769: Banns were published on the 23 and 30 July and 6 August and William Brereton and Mary Ledsham were married on the 7 August. Richard Ledsham (Mary's oldest brother) was a witness.
Between 1770 and 1782, the first 6 children were baptised at Bunbury. In 1770 they were living at Beeston when Richard was baptised. Then they moved South one mile to Peckforton (1773-1782). Both Brereton and Broughton name variants were used.
Between 1785 and 1780, William and Mary relocated to Harthill and had James, Samuel and Abraham baptised at All Saints, Harthill. These Harthill baptism records include the mother Mary.
In 1797, William’s daughter Mary had an illegitimate daughter Elizabeth, baptised at Harthill 22 March and then possibly adopted by her brother Richard and wife Elizabeth and re-baptised 16 July at Harthill. Elizabeth, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth died and was buried at Harthill, 1 May 1805, aged 8. In 1806, Mary had another illegitimate daughter Anne at Tiverton (near Beeeston) and baptised at Bunbury who died aged 2 months.
William died 22 June 1818 leaving a Will. Will of William Bruerton therefore of Harthill but late of Overton in the county of Flint Yoeman deceased was proved and admon granted unto Thomas Bruerton (probably his twin brother, not younger son) one of the Executors power being reserved to Richard Bruerton (eldest son) the other Executor.
The Harthill burial records William of Overton, aged 78.
