There were two children and numerous grandchildren alive in 1890 to perpetuate the name. Lives with: Sarah (unmarried, 32) and mother Catherine (62) were at 41 Blackburn Road, with Catherine's sister Ann Mather next door at 43

Sarah (unmarried, 42) and mother Catherine (72) were with Alazander and Elizabeth Clegg in 1881 Neighbor: Neighbours in 1861 and 1761 at Park Terrace, Little Bolton. Lives with: James, widow, aged 78 was with his unmarried sister Ann (head) in 1871 at 43 Blackburn Road Representative of: Sarah Jane was witness to Ann's marriage of 1879 Attending: Ann Mather, aged 64 of Blackburn Road, Sharples died of heart disease.  Her sister Catherine Heapy, also of Blackburn Road, was in attendance.

In 1851, Abraham and Catherine Heapy were at No.45 and Ann Mather (single) at No.46. Also James and Ann Mather at No.48. Neighbor: In 1861, Samuel and Nancy Kay and family and Joseph and Elizabeth Mather are at 133 and 130, Toppings, Turton Representative of: In 1871, Ann was witness to Jane's marriage Lives with: After her second marriage, Ann Turner lived with her daughter and son-in-law James Walker. Thomas and Jane were cousins. Lives with: Ada and Alice lived together and never married Know each other: In September, 1937, Clara (Mather) Allen took her girls Betty Jane and Ruth Allen to visit Edward's son Harold, at his residence at Lake Windermere.   Know each other: John Mather Black wrote a letter to Betty inviting ger to stay in England while viisiting Europe 1881 - ~1916 James Mather 35 35 James was the son of John Thomas Mather.

25 May 1907, James Mather (25), labourer and bachelor of 85 Millhill St, Bolton, son of  John Thomas Mather, Labourer married  Ada Barrow (25), Card Room Hand, Spinster of 88 Eustace St.  Witnesses: Mary Elizabeth Mather; John Barrow.

About 1916, James was killed in Action during WW1 1883 - 1937 Ada Barrow 54 54 Ada is th daughter of William Barrow, Labourer

25 May 1907, James Mather (25), labourer and bachelor of 85 Millhill St, Bolton, son of  John Thomas Mather, Labourer married  Ada Barrow (25), Card Room Hand, Spinster of 88 Eustace St.  Witnesses: Mary Elizabeth Mather; John Barrow.

Ada had a sister Rachel, aged 24 in 1911 1827 - 1875 James Mather 48 48 James and William were baptised in Bolton, the sons of William Mather and Martha (Bleakley).  They came from a prosporus background and were professional people.  William was an Attorney of Law, who died in 1835.  His wife Martha remarried in 1838, so the boys probably went into service.  James became a druggist.

In 1841, James and William (14 & 12) were not with their parents.  Instead, they were with John (an overlooker), Jane and family were at Barlow Street, Little Bolton whom had just married in Oct 1829 (so too young to be their parents).  They may be adopted by John, a relative.

In 1851, James is not with the family and may may have married Mary Stott at Deane in 1851, but there are no possible Bolton marriages.

James son of John Mather is possibly the son James (14) of John and Jane at Burton Street, Little Bolton in 1841.

21 Nov 1852, James Mather (24), son of John a weaver married Elizabeth Broom (21) at St Thomas, Heaton Norris.

In 1861, James and Elizabeth (30 & 27) were living at Lum Street, Bolton with Nancy (3) and John Thomas (2)

In 1871, James from Cheshire and Betsy (43 & 38) were at 1 Morris Street, Little Bolton with Nancy (14), John (13), Charles (10) and Elizabeth (1).

In 1881, Wife Elizabeth Mather (47, Head, married) was still at 58 Lum Street, Bolton with John, Charles and Elizabeth and three boarders  Had James left her?
 ~1772 - >1844 Martha (Matty) Ramsden 72 72 Parents possibly John & Jane Ramsden of Clifton, Ringley.

In 1790, Martha Ramsden married Solomon Mather.  They lived at Hall-i'th'Wood and had at least 5 children.

In 1844 Solomon died, and it appears Martha was still alive but apparently not with Solomon who was living with his daughter Ann in 1841.  His death records records his occupation as "Husband of Mather Mather, Hand Loom Weaver".

In 1841, Martha (75, Ind) may have been living at Castle Hill (farm), Hindley, Wigan with John Grime (26, Farmer) and Elizabeth Thomason (55, Assistant farmer). She was still there in 1851,  If this was her, then she died at Hindley in 1852, aged 89. 1806 - 1874 Mary Helm 68 68 Helm on marriage, although Helme on children's baptisms

Joseph and Mary are buried at Astley Bridge, St Paul. 1806 - 1843 Sarah Rostron 37 37 Of Bolton parish according to marriage.

In 1841, Joseph, a weaver (35) and Sarah (35) were with James (10) and Joseph (5), at Eagley, Turton.  Their neighbour was Solomon, Betty and family.  All (five) other children assumed dead. 1844 Ellen Mather In 1881, Ellen (unmarried and 36) was living with her married sister Jane Towler. 1846 Ann Mather 1850 - 1934 Jane Mather 84 84 Jane married David Fowler (b.1849) 1831 - 1859 James Mather 28 28 1837 - 1837 Richard Mather 4m 4m 1833 - 1835 Solomon Mather 2 2 1835 - 1886 Joseph Mather 51 51 Joseph (of Little Bolton) married Elizabeth Ann Rostron (of Turton) on 26 Sep 1857, and had children Sarah and Ellen and others.

In 1861 Joseph and Elizabeth Ann were living at Toppings, Turton

In 1870 the family were living at Bromley Cross (based on 1911 census showing Ellen's birthplace) 1840 - 1841 Ellen Mather 1 1 1842 - 1842 Martha Mather There are two Martha Mather births registered with MMN as Rostron (Q3-1841 and Q1-1841). They are less than 9 months appart, so are of different mothers.  The other Martha is the daughter of Richard and Mary Mather (nee Rosthorn) who married the same year. 1803 - 1870 Betty Barns 67 67 Betty was living at Astley Bridge when she died in 1803.  She and Solomon are buried, with flat-stone, at Christ Church, Walmsley. 1830 - 1880 William Mather 50 50 In 1841, William (10) was with his parents Solomon and Betty at Eagley, Turton.  There was possibly another older child that diedas William wasnt born untill 5 years after the parents marriage.

In 1871, William (39) was a manager at a Sewing Machine Factory, living next door to his father at Park Terrace, Eagley Bank, Sharples.  The family had a Fanny Woodward (71), a domestic servant. 1833 - 1909 Ann Mather 75 75 Anne was baptised on the same day as Samuel, son of Samuel (a basket maker) and Ann Mather of Little Bolton.

An was recorded as aged 31, spinster when she married James (32) in 1864. 1837 - 1886 Jane Mather 48 48 1840 - 1907 Thomas Mather 66 66 Sidney's baptism shows that like his father, he is also from Eagley, Sharples near Astley Bridge.

In 1841, Thomas (1) was with his parents at Eagley, Turton

In 1863, Thomas was witness at his sisters Jane's marriage and Ann's marriage in 1864.

In 1861 census, Thomas (20) was indexed as Frances Mather, living with his parents at Park Terrace, Little Bolton

In 1881, Thomas and Betsy (40 & 39) were at 1 Park View, Eagley Bank with Edward (16), Sidney (14), Evelyn (12), Albert (11), Elizabeth Hannah (9), Clara (7), Arthur (5) and Gertrude (3).  They had no more children after 1878. 1832 - 1876 James Haslam 44 44 James was the son of Richard Haslam (a publican) and Mary of Great Bolton.

A Clerk in Mill (1864-5), and then became a manager (1867) and overlooker (1875).

1849 to 1857 there was another HASLAM family (set of West Bolton births) with MMN = MATHER.

In 1861, James (29, unmarried) was with his parents Richard and Charlotte in Little Bolton.  He does not appear to have any children.

In 1871, James and Ann (39 & 37) and daughters Alice and Annie (6 & 3) were living with Ann's father Solomon Mather (71) at Park Terrace, Sharples. 1865 Alice Haslam 1868 Annie Jane Haslam 1875 - 1953 Richard Marsden Haslam 77 77 Richard was the manager of a cotton spinning mill and died a wealthy man.  He lived with his two sisters.  He left over £83,000 to Percy Bowker Haslam, an accountant. 1791 - 1866 Betty Mather 74 74 Betty is Solomon and Matty's first child, baptised 3 Jul 1971. They went along to the Presbyterian Walmsley Chapel with James and Betty Mather (from Goose Cote Hill) who had their daughter Margaret baptised the same day.  These were the only two baptisms at Walmsley that day.

In 1841, there is Betty Mather (50), in the Bolton Union Workhouse.  This is the right age, so could be her if she didnt marry.

In 1851 Betty Mather (64) was cotton weaver in the Turton Workhouse.  However her place of birth is Westhoughton so may not be her!

In 1861 Betty Mather (71) is still in the workhouse, and still shown as born at Westhoughton.  It may be her, but she was baptised at Walmsley.

A Betty Mather married James Makinson (Farmer) in Bolton 29-Nov-1813, which is a perfect age match! 1841 - 1922 Betsy Pendlebury Langshaw 81 81 Betsy's father is John Langshaw, a dyer (b.1813).  Her mother was Hannah Pendlebury (b.1808).  Se wasn't baptised until she was 10 years old.

Betsy emigrated to Fairfield, Connecticut, USA and appears on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US census 1865 - 1898 Edward (Eddie) Mather 32 32 In 1901, Martha (i.e. not Margaret) Mather (36, Wid) was head with her sons Seymore S (13), Harold H (11) and Horice V (8) 1866 - 1949 Sidney Mather 82 82 Sidney and Albert emigrated to the US. 

15 Oct 1895: Date of naturalisation at Bridgeport, Conn. 1868 - 1949 Eveline Mather 80 80 1869 - 1915 Albert Mather 45 45 Sidney and Albert emigrated to the US. 

Albert of 2407 Fairfield Ave, Bridgeport, Conn applied for naturalisation.  (Denied 30 Sep 1915, Dead). 1871 - 1872 Elizabeth Hannah Mather 9m 9m 1873 - 1940 Clara (Maud) Mather 66 66 In September, 1937, Clara (Mather) Allen took her girls Betty Jane and Ruth Allen to visit Edward's son Harold, at his residence at Lake Windermere.   1875 - 1946 Arthur Mather 70 70 1878 - 1966 Gertrude Mather 88 88 1837 John Gregory John was a manager at Farzley when he married Jane.

John's father was also John, a stone mason.

In 1881, John and Jane (44 & 43) were at 14 Hulme St, Regent Road, Salford with Ernest (15), Edith (13) and Mary E Hurst (18, servant) 1792 - 1872 James Mather 79 79 There's a James that married Ellen Mercer in 1797, and had their children baptised at Dukes Alley Chapel (NC) but this is obviously another.  From 1806, James's father Solomon also started using Bank Street.

28 Nov 1836, James married Mary Heaton.  Wright Crompton, b.~1810 the L.B. Blacksmith was witness.

In 1841, James and Mary (45 & 50) are at Poaket, Deane.

James Mather is on the 1841, 1851, 1861 (married to Mary) at Pocket, Rumworth, and 1871 census (widowed), born Turton with the correct age.

In 1861, James and Mary (68 & 69) are at Pocket, Rumworth.  James and Betsey Banks (24 & 26) are neighbours, with a possible DNA trail..

The 1871 census also shows James (78, Wid) is with his sister Ann (50) born Hall-i’th’-Wood (the same as brother Solomon).  Ann Scott (41) is a Lodger.

James (45) and Mary (50) ware living at Pocket, Rumworth, (There's a Pocket Nook Rd at Chew Moor), Rumworth in 1841, 1851 and his wife Mary died there in 1871. 

John Mather (15, MS) was the only other Mather in Rumworth in 1841.  He was probably James's son from an earlier marriage. 1828 - 1913 Ann Horrobin 84 84 From the headstone, we know Ann's parents were Betty (buried with her) and Roger Horrobin. Roger, a weaver, is also named on marriage record.

In 1861, Ann Mather (33, Wid) was with her mother Elizabeth Horrabin (70) at 150 Blackburn Road.  Her daughter Elizabeth (aged 4) is missing!

In 1871 Ann (40, Wid) is with her daughter Elizabeth A (13) at 29 Sand Hole, Astley Bridge

17 Sep 1872, Ann Mather (40, Widow) of 73 Bridgeman Street, daughter of Robert Horrabin (dec) married James Turner (38, Widower) of 33 Argyle Street, an Engine Tenter at St Peter's Bolton.

In 1881, Ann Turner (50) was a lodger at 1 Brindley Street, Little Bolton Higher End with her daughter

In 1911, Ann (82), widow) was still with her daughters family at 7 Setmore Street, Astley Bridge.  She died in 1913. 1799 - 1863 Abraham Heapy 64 64 In 1824, Abraham is a Wheel Wright in Great Bolton when John was baptised.  He soon bacame a Black Smith in Little Bolton and later (after 1844) in Sharples.

In 1836, Abraham Heapy (or Heapey) was a widower when he married Catherine. 1837 - 1887 Sarah Heapy 50 50 Sarah (unmarried, 42) and her mother Catherine (72) were living with Alazander and Elizabeth Clegg in 1881 1839 - 1922 Martha Heapy 82 82 1843 - 1927 Abraham Heapy 84 84 Married Ellen and moved to NY, USA.  They arrived 1882.

In 1910, Abraham and Ellen (66 & 67) were living with their son-in-law and daughter, William and Annie Brown (33 & 31) at Yonkers Ward 7, Westchester, New York. 1851 Elizabeth Heapy Samuel and Elizabeth baptised on same day (assumed twins).

Elizabeth married Alexander Clegg in 1878 and they had her mother Catherine with them in 1881 (and sister Sarah). 1851 - 1853 Samuel Heapy 1 1 Samuel and Elizabeth baptised on same day (assumed twins) 1841 - 1841 Elizabeth Heapy 7m 7m 1768 - 1844 Solomon Mather 76 76 Like his father, Solomon was a weaver.  He married Martha Ramsden 20 OCt 1790.  It was another Solomon of Edgworth that married Mary Grime 9-Aug-1809 at Bolton.

In 1790, Solomon married Marha Ramsden (Matty) and had Betty and James baptised at Walmsley (1791 & 1792). For 14 years, Births and Baptism are missing until 1806 when Joseph was baptised. 

From 1800 Solomon lived at Hall-i’th’-Wood. His son Solomon was born there about 1800, and daughter Catherine and Ann were born there 1809-1813 (see 1871 census).

In 1841, Solomon Mather was still alive at Old Nells, Little Bolton (not Old Nells, Turton), a hand loom weaver with his daughter Ann (25).

30 Nov 1844 Solomon died.  His death was reported in the newspaper on 7 Dec 1844.  The death certificate (attached) shows he died of "Fits" at Old Ellen's, Sharples aged 76. Old Ellen's and Old Nell's are probably the same place (Nell is a pet name for Ellen).

In 1851 he was a neighbour of Joseph (of Tong) and Mary Mather and family (James, Joseph, Ellen, Ann & Jane).  Joseph was his first son.



 1800 - 1890 Solomon Mather 90 90 Solomon was born in Hall-i’th’-Wood, Toppings, Turton about 1800.  There is no christening record, but it is assumed he is the son of Solomon and Martha.

In 1841, Solomon (40) was a Smallware Weaver with wife Betty (35) and William, Ann, Jane and Thomas (10, 5, 4 & 12m) at Eagley, Turton.  His older brother Joseph, Jane and family were neighbours (also S Weavers).

Solomon was a Weaver in Little Bolton when Anne was Baptised in 1833 and Jane Married.  In 1856 there was a fatal accident at Eagley Mill where a boy was killed while putting on a strap to the power mill.  Solomon had warned the lad not to do it (see Bolton Chronical 17 May 1856).

In 1861, Solomon and Betty (61 & 68) were living at Park Terrace, Little Bolton with Ann (27), Jane (23) and Frances (20, should be Thomas)

In 1863-64, Solomon was at Astley bridge when his three children married within a year of each other.

In 1871, Solomon (Wd, 71, Tape Weaver) is at 2 Park Terrace, Little Bolton.;  With him are his son-in-law James Haslam and Ann and their two children.

In 1881, Solomon is formerly a Weaver of Tapes (?), and from Toppings Turton. He is living with his daughter Ann Haslam

In 1901, Helen (30) was single and living with her mother aty 33 Queen St, Turton.

In 1911, Ellen was a visitor of Robert and Mary Critchley (58 & 34) at 103 Wigan Road, Leigh.  The census shows she was born at Bromley Cross. 1874 James Mather 1878 Edna Mather Edna (27) married Percy Waddicor (24, Mason) on 7 June 1906 at Walmsley Christ Church.  Her father Joseph, a wever was deceased. 1858 Job Valentine Job and Sarah Jane were from Walmsely when they married in 1882.  Job's father was Samuel Valentine, a weaver. 1791 - 1870 Mary Heaton 79 79 Mary was a widower (aged about 45) when she married James Mather in 1836.

In 1841 and 1871, James and Mary were at Pocket, Rumworth.

In 1891 he Married Margaret Ada Cooper and had four daughters.  The three youngest girls were all sent to private school at St. Anne on the Sea, Lytham (near Blackpool).  The oldest, Hilda, stayed with the family.

In 1939, Harold was a retired accountant living with his daughter Alice K Mather in Westmorland. 1865 - 1927 Ada Alice Mather 61 61 Ada never married.  She died at Wood Vicar, Duchy Rd, Harrogate in 1927 1866 - 1900 Ernest Augustus Gregory 34 34 Ernest was a Yarn Merchant and a Freemason at the Lodge of Charity. Initiation Date15 Nov 1894 1867 - 1938 Edith Mather Gregory 71 71 On 19 June 1899, Edith married Herbert Knott, a Chemist from Sharples.  She had a daughter Vera (b.1902) and a son Bernard (b.1905)

Edith lived at Willow Bank, Ivy Bank Road, Astley Bridge 1817 - 1874 Mary Mather 57 57 11 Jan 1841, Mary Mather married Richard Howcroft.  Later in June 1841, Richard and Mary (both 20) were at Hollins Cottages, Middle Hulton.  Then Richard Howcroft (a coal miner) died, so possibly a mining accident.  They had a daughter Ann baptised in 1842, after Richard had died.

21 Apr 1845 Mary (widow and daughter of John) married John Guest, and Elizabeth was born soon after.  However, it appears the marriage didnt last and Mary left John.

In 1851, daughter Ann Howcroft was living with her grandparents John and Ann Mather at 31 Nobel Street, W Bolton.

From 1849 to 1856 Mary had 7 children by John Haslam.  MMN = MATHER recorded for 7 births in Western Bolton.

In 1861, Mary was living with John Haslam 1806 - 1879 Joseph Mather 73 73 According to the childrens Baptisms and James marriage to Ann, Joseph was a Weaver.

In 1841, Joseph, a Smallware Weaver (35) and Sarah (35) were with James (10) and Joseph (5), at Eagley, Turton.  Their neighbour was Solomon, Betty and family.  Both families were Smallware Weavers.

9 June 1844, Joseph Mather, weaver, son of Solomon Mather, weaver married Mary Helm (aged 38), both from Radcliffe at Radcliffe St Mary.

Joseph lived at Turton (1851), Little Bolton (1861)

in 1871, Joseph and Mary (65 & 64) were at Eagley Bank LB with Ellen (26), Ann (25), and David and Jane Fowler.

Joseph and Mary are buried at Astley Bridge St Paul. 1859 Ann Mather 1852 Joseph Greenhalgh In 1874, Joseph was aged 27 and a widower when he married Ann Mather, aged 20 at Walmsley Christ Church. 1865 - 1866 Alice Rosthorn 1 1 1803 - 1817 Mary Mather 14 14 A child would be expected about 1803, and Mary, born Bolton is a good match.  There is no obvious baptism of a Mary Mather from Little Bolton, and we know Solomon's children's baptisms are missing.  It is a calculated guess that Mary was the daughter of Solomon.  There is no baptism, and a gap where a child is likely to be.

On 1 Jan 1876, John Mather (22), a grinder from Barlow Street, son of John (dec.) married Eliza Horrobin (21), the girl next door, dau of James (dec).  They were living at 21 and 23 Barlow Street, Little Bolton.

On 1 Jan 1876, John, a grinder, son of John (his adoptive grandparent) married Eliza Horrobin at Bolton St Peter. Jophn and Eliza were at 21 and 23 Barlow Street (where he was in 1861)

In 1881, John, a stripper and grinder, and Eliza (both 26) were at 1 Bailey Street, Halliwell with daughters Mary E (4) and Jane (1). Eliza's brother (tbc) Samuel Horrobin (31) was a boarder. 1813 - 1876 Ann Mather 62 62 In 1841, Ann Mather (25), a hand loom weaver, born Hall-i’th’-Wood, was with her father Solomon (70) at Old Nells.  Ann never married. 

In 1851, Ann (37, Unmarried, Weaver) was Head at 46 Blackburn Road, Sharples.  Her neighbour at 48 Blackburn Road were Samuel and Ann Mather (23 & 21).

In 1861, Ann (47) was Head, unmarried at Haslams House, Sharples. Lettice Grime (35, unmarried) was also with her.

In 1871, Ann (50) was Head, unmarried at 43 Blackburn Road (Sharples) with oldest brother James (78). She was born at Hall-i’th’-Wood.

Happy Mather also lived on the Blackburn Road. 1842 - 1923 Ellen Nightingale 81 81 1873 - 1971 William Heapy 98 98 William emigrated in 1883 with his first wife Mary Martha Jane.

He married Mary J Kay in New York, USA.  He was an Architect. 1879 Annie Heapy William and Elizabeth died as infants.  Replacements arrived in 1873 and 1879

Annie emigrated to the US with her father.  She married William Brown (unconfirmed). 1869 - 1869 William Heapy 2m 2m William and Elizabeth died as infants.  Replacements arrived in 1873 and 1879 1870 - 1871 Elizabeth Ellen Heapy 10m 10m William and Elizabeth died as infants.  Replacements arrived in 1873 and 1879 ~1795 <child> Mather ? There are no baptisms before 1806, but suerly Solomon would have had other children (including his son Solomon in 1800).  Sarah is very liokely.  She married Thomas Lowe, who was also born Hall-i’th’-Wood. 1803 - 1882 Nancy Mather 79 79 Samuel from Entwistle and Nancy Mather from the Turton Mather family of Toppings.  Most likely the daiughter of Solomon and Martha (or possibly Isaac & Nancy).  In 1881 Nancy's son George had niece Ann Mather (16) living with him.  This suggests Nancy is the daughter of Isaac.

Nancy Mather had an illegitimate daughter Eliza born 1819.  It may be this Nancy (tbc).

In 1841, Samuel and Nancy (both 35) were at Chapel Town, Turton with John (10), Elizabeth (5) and George (3).  Chapeltown is 1 mile SW of Edgwoth and 1.5 miles NE of Topppings, Turton.

In 1851, Samuel and Nancy (47 & 48) were at Chapel Town, Turton with John (20), Elizabeth (16), George (12), and Ann (9)

Nancy & Samuel Kay moved to Tottington (close) and had Kitty, Elizabeth and Alice.

In 1871, Samuel and Nancy (69 & 68) were at Toppings, Turton with daughter Ann (29). Her son John Kay was a neighbour.

In 1881, Nancy Kay (78) was living with her spinster daughter Ann (39) at 161 Toppings Road, Turton.

Nancy died Nov 1882, aged 79 1849 David Towler 1793 - 1856 Sarah Mather 63 63 UNCONFIRMED:  Possible parents William and Betty married in 1779, but there is only one baptism for Alice in 1792.  It is very likely there are several more Mather children from Turton with baptism records missing. Another possibility is a daughter of Solomon and Martha, also with a large gap where you may expect births. It is assumed that Sarah is one such person!
Because Solomon was born at Hall-i’th’-Wood, and so was Sarah's husband Thomas Lowe, then this seems the more likely.  Either would result in DNA matches.

In 1841, Thomas and Sarah Lowe (50 & 45) are living at Bank Top, Sharples with Betty (20), Thomas (15), Joseph (15), Jesse (12), William (10) and George (8)

In 1851, Thomas and Sarah Lowe (63 & 68) were living at Bank Top, Sharples with Betty (32), Jessie (23), William (18) and George (17).  Henry Fairhurst (26, a possible relative) was a neighbour.  Hall-i’th’-Wood is nearby. 1842 Ann Howcroft (Haslam) Ann "Haslan" was born about 1841 to 1843.  There were 9 Ann(e) Haslam births in Bolton over this period.  However, none have a common Mothers Maiden Name with her sister Elizabeth's births (so probably adopted half-sisters and Elizabeth is probably from Mary's previous marriage).

Ann was born and baptised in 1842, after her father Richard Howcroft had died.   Her mother Mary remarried and Ann was probably brought up be her grandparents.

In 1851, Ann Howcroft (aged 9 and a lodger) was living with her grandparents John and Ann (67 & 64)

In 1865, Ann married John Southern.

In 1871, married daughter Ann Neaham (28, should be Southern) was with her parents John and Mary Haslam. 1845 Elizabeth Guest (Haslam) There is no birth registered for Elizabeth with MMN = MATHER, so she may be from another marriage. The three Elizabeth Haslam biths registeres in 1845-46 are others:
1) The daughter of Peter and Sarah Haslam nee Dumbhill, fatmers of Tong, Sharples.
2) The daughter of John and Mary Yates (not Gates) who moved from Bolton to Manchester
3) The daughter of Samuel and Margaret Greenhalgh who died in 1848 aged 1.
Therefore she must be an adopted daughter, probably Mary's from an earlier marriage.

25 Nov 1868, Elizabeth, daughter of John Haslam a weaver of Emmanuel Street married Thomas Booth. 1785 Mary Mather There are 7 possible Bolton marriages of Mary Mather from 1804 to 1824. Assuming she stayed in the area and buried at Turton, only one of these Marys is a match, the marriage to James Lee in 1823.  Howver is is another couple born about 1800.

15 Jul 1810, Mary Mather married John Haslam a weaver.  They had a son William in 1814, but after that there were 5 more marriaged of John Haslam to a Mary.

In 1812, Ann Haslam was baptised, daughter of John and Mary Ann.

In 1819, Mary's borther Charles died aged 27, so her next son born 1823 was named after him.

In 1841, John a Dyer and Mary Haslam (50 & 55) were at Bottom, Edgworth with William (25), Thomas (15) and Isaac (14)

By 1851, John had died and Mary Haslam (66) was a Widow at Russia Bottom, Edgworth with Thomas (24) and Isaac (22).  The census shows she was born at Quarlton (near Edgworth) 1809 - 1891 Catherine Mather 82 82 23 Nov 1845, Catherine daughter of Solomon Mather married John Jones at Manchester.  This Catherine was a minor, and her father a farmer, so this is another Manchester Mather family.

18 Sep 1836, this Catharine Mather (spelt with an a) married Abraham Heaply.  Their witness was Joseph Lowe, Catherine's nephew and son of her sister Sarah.

In 1871, Catherine Heapy (62) is living on the Blackburn Road, next door to her sister Ann Mather (70) at nos 41 & 43 Blackburn Road, Sharples.

In 1876, When her sister Ann died, Catherine Heapy was in attendance (see Ann's death cert).

In 1891, Catherine Heapy (81, not 31) was head with daughter Martha Lancaster (50), Elizabeth Clegg (38) and (grand-)son Samuel Lancaster (22) 1831 Elizabeth (Betsy) Broom 21 Nov 1852, James Mather (24) married Elizabeth Broom (21) daughter of Henry Broom, a weaver at St Thomas, Heaton Norris.

In 1861, James and Elizabeth (30 & 27) were living at Lum Street, Bolton with Nancy (3) and John Thomas (2)

In 1871, James and Betsy (43 & 38)  were with Nancy (14), John (13), Charles (10) and Elizabeth (1).

In 1881, Elizabeth Mather (47, Head Married) was still at 58 Lum Street, Bolton with John, Charles and Elizabeth (21, 19 & 11) and three boarders. Husband James was not there 1857 Nancy Mather NOTE: There is another Nancy daughter of James born 1856. That James was a Manifacturer and then a Druggist, and that Nancy was still with her parents in 1881.

2 Sep 1876, Nancy Mather (20) of 69 Mill Street (near Bromily Cross), daughter of James Mather a carder, married Robert Stott (21), a collier of 12 Bare Street, son of John Stott a Slipmaker.

17 Nov 1883, Charles Mather, a Roller Maker, son of James Mather a carder married Ruth Ware, daughter of John Ware, a spinner at St John's, Bolton.

Maria was born in Q1 1884, so Charles had juse a few months with his small family before he died in Q3 1884.

In 1814, John and Mary had a son William.  They had other children, but because of 5 other John Haslam and Mary marriages in 1815 and 1816, we cant be sure of the others.

In 1841, John a Dyer and Mary Haslam (50 & 55) were at Bottom, Edgworth with William (25), Thomas (15) and Isaac (14)
