Sarah's father was William Henry Alexander Woodward and her mother was Charlotte Owens.  Her paternal grandparents were John Woodward and Charlotte Symcock. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Amelia and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Richard and Charlotte.
