Thomas was born in July 1816 in Bolton and his baptism took place on July 14th, 1816 at St. Mary (Deane).1  Thomas' father was Nathan Wood and his mother was Margaret Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Nathan, Charles, John, John, Betty and Maria.  He was the oldest of the seven known children.
