Herbert's father was Lawson Wood and his mother was Ellen Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Sarah Wood; his maternal grandparents were William Taylor and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Fred, Harold, Ronald, Doris and Eva.  He was the youngest of the six known children.
