Elizabeth's father was Robert Wilson and her mother was Mary Ann Foster. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Wilson and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were Matthias Foster and Mary Foulds. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Eva and Annie. She was the oldest of the seven children.
