Richard's father was William Wilkinson and his mother was Ellen Tomlinson.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Tomlinson and Alice Allen. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Ann, Betty, Ann and Alice.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
