Sidney was born in September 1894 in Oldham.1  Sidney's father was George Eli Whitehead and his mother was Sarah Dyson.  His paternal grandparents were <unknown> and Elizabeth Whitehead. He had two brothers named Tom and Frank.  He was the youngest of the three known children.
