John was born in 1766 in Ormskirk and his baptism took place there on January 19th, 1766.1  John's father was Robert Whalley and his mother was Ellen (Nell) Kingsley.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Whalley and Alice Whalley. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Alice, Alice and Ann.  He was the oldest of the six children.
