Robert was born in December 1906 in Liverpool.1  Robert's father was Robert McBurnie Westphal and his mother was Maud Adelaide Porter.  His paternal grandparents were Augustus William John Martin Westphal and Elizabeth McBurnie. He had two brothers named Harold and Fredrick.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
