Fredrick was born in June 1908 in Liverpool.1  Fredrick's father was Robert McBurnie Westphal and his mother was Maud Adelaide Porter.  His paternal grandparents were Augustus William John Martin Westphal and Elizabeth McBurnie. He had two brothers named Harold and Robert.  He was the youngest of the three children.
