Harold was born in December 1904 in Liverpool.1  Harold's father was Robert McBurnie Westphal and his mother was Maud Adelaide Porter.  His paternal grandparents were Augustus William John Martin Westphal and Elizabeth McBurnie. He had two brothers named Robert and Fredrick.  He was the oldest of the three children.
