Betsey was born in 1843 in Little Hulton.1  Betsey's father was Robert Welsh and her mother was Maria (Mary) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Barret. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, William, Hannah, Mary and Emma.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
