Bertha was born in November 1888 in Farnworth and her baptism took place on November 4th, 1888 at St. John the Evangelist (Failsworth).1 2  Bertha's father was Henry Unsworth and her mother was Alice Lomax.  Her maternal grandparents were Benjamin Lomax and Alice Horridge. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Edward, Benjamin, Annie and Ada.  She was the youngest of the five children. She had two half-brothers named Frank and Harry.
