William was born in 1787 in Malpas and his baptism took place in January 1787 at St. Oswalds (Malpas).1  William's father was Randle Tomlinson and his mother was Martha Cartwright.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Mary. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Randle, Thomas, Charles, Mary and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
