Martha's father was John Tomlinson and her mother was Martha Lindop.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Phoebe Owens. She had four sisters named Mary, Frances, Elizabeth and Margaret.  She was the oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 74 in March 1884 in Chester.²
