Martha was born in 1830 in Huddersfield and her baptism took place on June 7th, 1829 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1 2  Martha's father was William Sykes and her mother was Sarah Wood. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, William, George, Mary and Lucretia.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
