Mary was born in May 1817 in Huddersfield and her baptism took place on May 25th, 1817 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1  Mary's father was William Sykes and her mother was Sarah Wood. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, William, George, Lucretia and Martha.  She was the oldest of the six children.
