Richard was born in 1741 in Fartown and his baptism took place on March 7th, 1741 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).1  Richard's father was David Stocks and his mother was Sarah Brook.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Stocks and Eliza Wilkinson. He had four brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel, David and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Anne.
