Maria was born in December 1858 in Huddersfield.1  Maria's father was Benjamin Stocks and her mother was Rachel Farrand.  Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Ann Peel. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Sam, Allen, Emma and Mary.  She was the youngest of the five children.
