Allen was born in September 1852 in Honley.1  Allen's father was Benjamin Stocks and his mother was Rachel Farrand.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Ann Peel. He had a brother and three sisters, named Sam, Emma, Mary and Maria.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
