Nathan's father was William Smith and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Ann Anderton. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, George, Alice and Peggy.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 76 in April 1850 in Heath Charnock.  He was buried on April 13th, 1850 in Rivington.²
