Elizabeth's father was Dudley Sandford and her mother was Mary (Maria) Hassall.  Her paternal grandparents were William Sandford and Elizabeth Bryne; her maternal grandparents were John Hassall and Margery Jerius. She had a brother and three sisters, named Dudley, Jane, Mary and Margery.  She was the second youngest of the five children.
