John was born in April 1802 in Harwood and his baptism took place on April 18th, 1802 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  John's father was Thomas Rostron and his mother was Mary Holt.  His maternal grandparents were Edmund Holt and Ellen Hamers. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, William and Jane.  He was the oldest of the four children.
