Samuel's father was Edward Roberts and his mother was Elizabeth Jones. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Thomas, Edward, Mary, Elizabeth, Jane and Anne.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 30 in February 1852.

‌Samuel and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on August 3rd, 1845 in Northop.³   They had two sons named John and Joseph.
