Alice was born in 1846 in Lowton and her baptism took place on September 13th, 1846 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  Alice's father was John Rigby and her mother was Betty Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead. She had a sister named Mary.  She was the younger of the two children.
