Joseph was born in 1713 in Slaithwaite and his baptism took place there on January 27th, 1713.1  Joseph's father was George Parkin and his mother was Susanna Harrison. He had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Robert, Mary, Sarah and Anne.  He was the third youngest of the six known children.
