Ellen was born in January 1848 in Little Bolton.1  Ellen's father was Philip Greenhalgh and her mother was Martha Gradwell. She had a brother and a sister, named Christopher and Parthenia.  She was the second oldest of the three known children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Joseph and Martha.
