Thomas' father was Thomas O'Gara and his mother was Emma Purcell.  His paternal grandparents were Patrick O'Gara and Eleanor Cartwright; his maternal grandparents were William Purcell and Emma Sixsmith. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Gerald, Leo, Kathleen and Eileen.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Irene.
