John's father was Anthony Nuttall and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Mather and Alice Cowp. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Mally and Alice.  He was the youngest of the five children.  He died as an infant at 8 months old in January 1786 in Haslingden.  He was buried on February 3rd, 1786 in Haslingden.¹
