Mary's father was John Millington and her mother was Hannah Piercy. Her paternal grandparents were William Millington and Jane Williams. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Albert, William, John, Rosannah, Elizabeth, Louisa, Alice, Julia and Annie. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
