William was born in 1876 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on May 10th, 1876 at All Saints, Little Bolton.1  William's father was John Mather and his mother was Isabella Barrow.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Mary Ramsden. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Mary and Annie.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 2 in 1878 in Little Bolton.2
