Walter was born in September 1880 in Walmersley.1  Walter's father was William Booth Mather and his mother was Isabella Adelaide Holmes.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Ellen Horsefield. He had a brother named Frederick.  He was the younger of the two children.
