Thomas was born in March 1828 in Billinge and his baptism took place on March 23rd, 1828 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Anne. He had a brother and a sister, named John and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
