John was born in January 1821 in Billinge and his baptism took place on January 7th, 1821 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Anne. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the three children.
