Thomas was born on March 8th, 1831 in Lowton and his baptism took place on June 12th, 1831 at St. Luke (Lowton).1  Thomas' father was Isaac Mather and his mother was Ann Eckersley. He had a brother and four sisters, named James, Betty, Ann, Martha and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
