Martha was born on February 12th, 1837 in Lowton and her baptism took place on September 17th, 1837 at St. Luke (Lowton).1 2  Martha's father was Isaac Mather and her mother was Ann Eckersley. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, James, Betty, Ann and Jane.  She was the second youngest of the six children.
