Thomas' father was James (Jim) Mather and his mother was Rachel Skeat. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah Halliday. He had two brothers and a sister, named Frederick, Harry and Edna. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 72 on September 25th, 1976 in Tyldesley.²
